Science in Society

This seminar is about the role of science in society. Together we will read and discuss texts about the development of science and technology studies (Science in Society: An Introduction to Social Studies of Science by Massimiano Bucchi), the relationship of democracy and science (Science in Democracy by Mark Brown) and the connection between science and social movements (Acting in an Uncertain World by Michel Callon). For each chapter of the books there will be a short oral presentation (plus handout) by a student. Also you will write abstracts for the first two books and an essay concerning the question whether Callon’s assessment of the changes in the production of scientific knowledge seems probable.
