Globalization, Education & Development

Globalization, Education & Development

The aim of this module is to introduce students to major debates on the relationships between globalisation, education and processes of development in both ‘the South’ and ‘the North’. Students will acquire the historical, conceptual, empirical and theoretical foundations for a critical analysis of how processes of globalisation are linked to issues of the global governance of education and processes of economic, political, social and cultural development in specific contexts. The course will be organised around two blocks ‘Introduction & History of Globalisation & Development Thinking and Practices’ and ‘Themes of Education, Globalisation & Development’. Selected primary and secondary key texts will be used, and the sessions will be composed of a mixture of introductory lectures to the topics, discussion, participatory group activities, student presentations, audio-visual and documentary materials, and a guest presentation.

Block I (14/15th November) introduces students to the main strands of development thinking (modernisation; dependency; neo-liberalism; post-development), key actors (e.g., governments, IMF, World Bank, WTO, CSOs, NGOs), empirical aspects (poverty, inequality, social justice), and theoretical approaches to globalisation.
Block II (28/29th November) applies this knowledge to present-day issues and case studies, such as: ‘aid’, structural adjustment & education; the global knowledge economy, lifelong learning & ICT; the ‘Bologna Process’; trade in education services; education & conflict; popular education & alternative development trajectories; South-South cooperation in education & development; the post-2015 education & development agenda.
These topics are suggestions and will be adjusted to students’ specific interests.
